Phone Batteries and When to Replace Yours

Each one of our phones has an integral part that we don’t often think about except that we must plug our phones almost everyday, sometimes multiple times a day.  I will discuss when to replace your battery, how long you can expect it to last.  I will give some safety tips.  Some phones can go three days with moderate use such as just answering calls and messaging and I will highlight some of these options in another article.

I will first explain battery health on the iPhone.  Inside of the settings app on your phone there is a battery section containing the battery health.  The battery health is a measure of how degraded the battery has become since new.  So if your battery health is 80%  your battery has lost 20% of its charging capacity when compared to the same battery new.  The general consensus is that 83% and below is when you should consider getting a new battery installed.  This is of course a general recommendation and you will know when your battery needs replaced.

For Samsung phones you will need to download a special app to see your battery health called “Samsung Members App.”  This App also has the nice feature of telling you when you should replace the battery.

Some symptoms of a bad battery are a charge that lasts significantly shorter than when new, usually having to recharge it multiple times in a day to stop it from shutting down.  The other symptoms you may experience are slow performance and battery swelling.  If your battery is swelling its important to get to a local repair shop sooner rather than later.

Battery changes are a great way to extend the lifespan of your device.  Batteries are one of the most important parts of your phone and the cost of a replacement is 3X or more less than replacing your phone.
